Question M0-04-10

\( (x – a) \) is a common factor of \( f(x) \) and \( g(x) \).

  1. Show that \( (x – a) \) is also a factor of \( f(x) + g(x) \).
  2. If \( bx^3 + 3x^2 – 4x – 12 = 0 \) and \( -bx^3 – x^2 + 2x + 8 = 0 \) have a common root, show that \( b = 1 \) or \( -5 \).
